  • Managers support RedBlock
    Updated On: Dec 15, 2016
From left, Lou Bellotti, deputy general manager; Danny O'Connell, assistant superintendent road operations; and Kurt Laird, deputy general manager; serve on RedBlock steering committees.

Trainmaster George Ross supports Operation RedBlock as an events coordinator for the New England Division. He distributes educational material to captains and notifies managers of upcoming events.

Planning enables managers to ensure a full staff during RedBlock events. He also advocates the program to other managers.

“I make sure they understand that RedBlock is out there to help employees,” Ross said. “It gives people an opportunity to avoid being taken out of service and offers them help.”

The New England Division ORB committee has grown dramatically throughout the past two years. Ross joined the cause in March 2014. His team has made excellent progress in raising program awareness.

“Part of the challenge for the entire country is to let new employees know that RedBlock exists, what it can do for them and how to get help if they need it,” he said.

Ross and other managers buy in to RedBlock because it enhances safety in the workplace and reduces potential situations where managers must remove employees from service.
“It enhances the safe work environment because it helps prevent employees from potentially working impaired,” he said. “It’s a good, confidential program.”

Ross joined Amtrak® in 1979 and has been a manager for the past
    11 years.
